Young Han Solo Has Finally Arrived: A Few Quick Thoughts
Here we go. The first trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story has been unleashed upon us. This is the second in a series of spin-offs based on the mega franchise Star Wars, the first being Rogue One. The movie has had some trouble getting off the ground with reports of the very public firing of directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller-two talented artists who first got a crack at the famous scoundrel's pre-rebel years. After "creative differences" with Queen B Kathleen Kennedy they were cut off and replaced with a super safe (but respectable) choice in Ron Howard. Ron is a vet in the industry and knows how to finish movies on time, on budget, with studios breathing down his neck and it's obvious why Disney chose him to finish the movie. They didn't want an unstable auteur coming back in and shaking things up. They wanted a person who can follow orders and finish it. No tricky shots, no slick shooting or change of dialogue. Get it done. And by the looks of the trailer, unfortunately, that's exactly what Ron did. Will it amount to a superb movie that goes beyond anything we've seen in Star Wars? Probably not. But Disney doesn't care about that stuff. They just want the bucks.
I'm not one of those people who likes to judge movies by trailers. Trailers can be very misleading, causing movies to tank or prosper opening weekend than tank the following week. This trailer looks sleek and eye-popping, with interesting angles and shots. Reports of Lord & Miller improvising too much caused their downfall. so when the movie does come out it's going to be fun to figure out which dialogue choices/shots/jokes were Lord & Miller and which ones were in the script already. One thing is for sure, it's going to get a lot of people talking. Good luck Alden Ehrenreich. A storm a coming for you. And by the looks of this trailer, you better take shelter.
