About That Tarantino Star Trek Movie & Why It Will Be The Opposite Of What Everyone is Expecting
Let me catch you up to speed if you missed the news. A few weeks ago reports broke that Quentin Tarantino, you know the guy responsible for violent escapes such as Django Unchained and Reservoir Dogs, hatched an idea for a new Star Trek movie and it was quickly been pushed through development. According to Deadline a writers room is even being established:
I’ve heard the plan is to assemble a writers room of scribes who’ll hear Tarantino’s take and begin to put together a movie. If it all works out, Tarantino might direct it, with Abrams producing.
Whoa.
Every film fan's mouth dropped to the floor. Quentin in space? Who would of thought that would ever happen? Even more bizarre Paramount is agreeing for the film to be rated R as in Deadpool rated R or The Matrix rated R. Tarantino wouldn't do the film without that specific rating and the giant movie studio was like "Sure fuck it!" So no more phasers set to stun?
While this deal just shows the desperation Paramount has regarding this franchise what do they have to lose? It's not like the last three Trek movies were grand slams at the box office. It feels like the franchise has yet to take off like a Fast & Furious or other mega blockbusters. You're talking about a decades old IP that has thousands of fans and new ones waiting to be mined and you're still having trouble making your money back. It's understandable why Paramount would try something fresh and new to breathe life back into this wonderful series. And it's not like the R rating is worrisome. With Logan and Deadpool being MONSTROUS HITS at the box office (for an R Rated film) studio execs probably feel less pressure because they know there is a mature audience out there that wants adult films and not Disney superhero level food fed to the every time they sit in a movie theater. It feels like every thing is lined up to create an interesting project. But I mean this is why we love film right? Interesting projects is what gets us excited to spend that 12.50 at the theater and be transported into another world.
Now while every one is expecting this to be a bloody affair, I expect the opposite. Let me tell you why. Quentin is a professional. He knows film like nobody else. So I think he's smart enough not to make fun of his filmography and turn the ship's bridge into a curse fest filled with N bombs and "fucks" and "shits" while people get their heads blown off with alien guns. He understands that kind of dialogue and violence won't work in that universe. He's talented enough to adapt to Trek's underlying aesthetic while bringing his unique flavor to the story. And I can't wait. Hopefully this thing makes it to the screen so I can thank God I actually lived long enough to see a Quentin Tarantino Star Trek movie. What a time to be alive.
