4 Things The Bond Reboot Should Have (Or Not Have)
Soon Daniel Craig's last Bond movie will be upon us and a new iteration of the decades long hero will come. Skyfall represented the very best for the future of Bond movies in this modern age and Spectre signaled a step back. In order for Bond to exist in the world of Ethan Hunt's and John Wick's and Atomic Blonde's it must change. Here are four things I feel would create a new fresh James Bond movie right at home in 2017 and beyond.
No Silly Gadgets
Like I said in the opening. With John Wick blasting people's heads off point blank with pistols and murdering thugs bare hand, it's easy to look at a Bond movie now a days with stupid gadgets and think Batman & Robin-like campy disaster. With the age of smart phones and apps upon us, it isn't super anymore to have a secret agent have 100 things in his belt. Because that is universal for all of us. Even movies such as Kingsmen: The Secret Service has taken this tool and used it for comedic effect therefore enforcing the notion that silly gadgets means silly movie. Skyfall touched on this topic and agreed: For a Bond to exist in this world means going small. And small is in.
Story Arc
Movies copying television is all the rage right now. Interconnected universes, movies with sequels that span years with spin offs and such. At the bottom of this trend is a need to tell more story. Gone are the days of just planning one story and ending it there for blockbusters. For Bond having an arc, a supervillain he battles for a trilogy, maybe even beyond, lets Bond finally flex it's storytelling muscle a bit. It would bring a fresh pace to the movies and create the most intimate Bond ever when it comes to audiences. Some people were pissed they dove into Bond's background with Skyfall. But that is why it was such a critical success. We started to understand Bond and dive deeper into who he is as a character. He wasn't just a sipping Martini ladies man with good aim. He had a face. And with a trilogy of recurring characters behind him and a story to balance on Bond 26 could replicate that success 10 fold and give the spy we need.
Female Supervillain
How cool would it be to see James Bond go up against an Atomic Blonde-like character? Or a Cypher from Fate of The Furious? Not just a simple henchman either. Sure we have had evil women in the series before but I'm I'm talking about Blofield type damage. The puppet on the strings who controls everything. Having a villain of the opposite sex terrorize Bond for 3 movies would be such a radical change from previous installments. A ruthless cunning gangster who uses her minions for the dirty work or an international terrorist who fights Bond blow for blow, all exciting concepts that would fit perfectly in today's female charged movie climate. People want to see more females on screen and with a strong villainous woman stacked against Bond, it will bring new fans and a whole lot of bucks. And give Jessica Chastain her dream role already!
Young & Inexperienced
I think it's time to have our youngest Bond yet. Not talking teenage years but someone who is reckless and careless. Who doesn't play by the rules because either he doesn't know them or doesn't care. We've had Daniel Craig play the rugged older gentlemen in the suit. Going in the complete opposite direction would give audiences a fresh direction to experience and grow up with Bond 26 throughout these continuing movies. As he experiences heartache we do too, and as he grows up and matures we get to watch that first hand as we have taken the wild ride alongside him. Similar to how Marvel/Sony is doing Spider-Man now, starting off young creates a Bond with audiences (pun intended) and ensures that this particular character will grow up in our hearts. Just ask Harry Potter. Oh and Dan Stevens.
